History of the Third District Foundation
The Foundation was formed as a result of the Vision of the Third District Representative, Joseph C. McKinney, the 19th District Representative of the Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The actual formalization of Foundation was realized during the leadership of Gary C. Clark, the 20th Third District Representative of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
The purpose of the Corporation is exclusively for educational, civic, literary, scientific, prevention of cruelty to children or animals and similar non-profitable purposes as contemplated by Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954. The Articles of Incorporation of the Foundation allow the Corporation to solicit and receive funds and property by gift, transfer, devise or bequest, and may administer and apply such funds and property only in the furtherance of the purposes identified above. The Corporation shall not engage in activities attempting to influence legislation nor shall it directly or indirectly participate or intervene (including publishing or distributing statements) in any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for public office or any other activity not within the purpose set out for the Corporation. Since its inception the Third District Foundation has generously provided thousands of dollars in Scholarships to Undergraduates enrolled in Colleges and Universities throughout our primary service area, the State of Virginia and the District of Columbia. These recipients have received support while pursuing Baccalaureate as well as Advanced Degrees. The Foundation currently provides $10,000 in scholarships annually. The Foundation has provided support to the Arts and Humanities in our service area by conducting an annual Talent Hunt Competition. The talent identified during our Talent Hunt Competition has been extraordinary. Many of our participants have gone on to careers in the entertainment field. The Foundation has provided thousands of dollars since its inception to the Talent Hunt participants. The Foundation currently provides over $3,000 annually in support of the Talent Hunt Activities. The Foundation has also provided thousands of dollars in Grants to the Third District of Omega Psi Phi Chapters who have demonstrated Social Action excellence in their communities. These activities include, support of St Jude’s Hospital, youth mentor-ship programs, feeding the hungry, health fairs, blood drives to name a few. The Foundation has recently supported the Ghana Bore Hole Project which provides fresh water to villages in Ghana that do not have a viable supply of fresh water. |
